Kiev asks Bucharest to back sending peacekeepers to Donbas
   (Interfax) --- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis have discussed the initiative to deploy peacekeepers in Donbas.
   "I have asked the Romanian side to back Ukraine's appeal to the UN Security Council and the EU Council about the deployment of peacekeepers to provide security on the contact line and on the uncontrolled sections of the state border. In our opinion, which is shared by our partners, it will ensure better stabilization and can help us avoid many casualties," Poroshenko said at a press conference after talks with Iohannis in Kiev on Tuesday.

EC should be ready to impose new sanctions against Russia - Swedish Prime Minister
   KIEV, March 17 (Ukrinform). --- The EU should be ready for the introduction of new economic sanctions against Russia or extending existing sanctions.
   Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said this during a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz in Warsaw on Monday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
   "Russian aggression is the greatest threat to European security. The unity of the European countries in this matter should be a priority. We want to be ready for the introduction of the next expanded economic sanctions or for extending the existing ones. It is also necessary to support Ukraine in its difficult economic situation, to prevent this country from not rising," Lofven said.
   According to him, Stockholm will continue to support the development of the Eastern Partnership project.

Ukrainian air reconnaissance confirms violations of Minsk agreements by terrorists near Luhansk.
   (Censor.NET) --- Russia-backed mercenaries do not withdraw heavy weapons but hide them near the buffer zone. Ukrainian reconnaissance confirmed data received by drones.
   As reported by Censor.NET, air reconnaissance by Ukrainian army confirmed that the mercenaries did not intend to withdraw heavy weapons and hid them in villages. The video shows images by Ukrainian drones showing Russian-separatists heavy weapons concealed in areas close to the front line.

Three Ukrainian military killed, five wounded in Donbas in past 24 hours
   KIEV, March 17 (Ukrinform). --- Three Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and another five have been injured in the area of anti-terrorist operation in Donbas over the last 24 hours.
   Spokesman for the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine Andriy Lysenko said this at a briefing in Kiev on Tuesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
   "Over the last day, we have lost three Ukrainian soldiers, and another five were injured as a result of shelling and military clashes," Lysenko said.

Ukrainian Pilot Savchenko Resumes Hunger Strike In Russian Jail

   (RFE/RL) --- Ukrainian military pilot Nadia Savchenko says she has resumed her hunger strike in a Russian jail and is prepared to die if she is not released.
   Savchenko announced the decision in a letter from pretrial detention at Moscow's Matrosskaya Tishina jail.
   "As of March 16, I am resuming the hunger strike until I am returned to Ukraine or until the last day of my life in Russia," she wrote in the letter posted on Twitter by one of her lawyers, Mark Feigin.
   "I have no intention of changing my decision," she wrote in a separate letter addressed to her lawyers.
   Savchenko, 33, lost about 20 kilograms after being drip-fed on glucose and vitamins alone during a hunger strike she began on December 13.
   She stopped the hunger strike on March 5, citing health concerns.
   Savchenko is charged with involvement in a mortar attack that killed two Russian journalists covering the conflict between government forces and Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
   She says she was kidnapped by separatists in June and illegally brought to Russia, which she says has no right to try her.

Ukrainian army received first tranche of humanitarian aid from Canada - Joint Staff
   (Censor.NET) --- Ukrainian army received the first tranche of the humanitarian aid from Canada on Monday.
   The tranche amounts to almost $230,000 and includes night vision equipment. This was announced by the press officer of the Joint Staff of the Ukrainian Army Oleksii Mazepa at a briefing in Kiev on Tuesday, Censor.NET reports citing UNIAN.
   "Ukrainian army received the first tranche of the humanitarian aid from Canada yesterday," he said.
   "These are 60 night vision devices. Total value of the tranche is $226,890," Mazepa added.

Terrorists concentrated 6,000 soldiers and 60 tanks near Horlivka, Donetsk region - InfoResist
   (Censor.NET) --- About 6,000 soldiers of Russian terrorist troops are currently deployed in the area of Horlivka -Yenakiieve - Debaltseve of the Donetsk region.
   As reported by Censor.NET, this was announced by MP Dmytro Tymchuk on his Facebook page citing operational data by Information Resistance group.
   According to InfoResist information, the Russian terrorist forces in the area include 'Horlivka garrison,' some of 'Oplot' (Russian terrorists - ed.) units, and several smaller detachments, including 'Vostok' and 'Somali.'
   "This group of troops has powerful and long-range weapons, including Smerch... In most cases, the weapons are 'withdrawn' to positions from which they can be deployed to their fire positions along the front line within less than 60 minutes," Tymchuk noted.
   According to him, 60 tanks are also concentrated in the area between Krasnohorivka and north of Horlivka: "Those include T-64 of various modifications, T-72 equipped with new types of shells and devices that allow to fight at long distances and at night, as well as at least 95 various armoured vehicles."
   Tymchuk also added that a combat service support and an air defense system have been organized in the area, including three radar systems and fire units at the front line.

Unrest In Ukrainian Town After Girl Killed By Armoured Vehicle
   (RFE/RL) --- Authorities in a government-held town in eastern Ukraine have made arrests after violence that followed a road accident in which an armoured vehicle struck and killed a young girl.
   Angry residents of the Donetsk region town of Kostyantynivka threw stones at a barracks, torched two cars, and overturned a third after servicemen apparently lost control of an armoured vehicle on March 16, killing a girl who was about 7 years old and injuring her aunt and a toddler.
   Police stepped up patrols to avert any more unrest, Donetsk region police chief Vyacheslav Abroskin said on Facebook on March 17.
   Abroskin said two servicemen responsible for the accident had been detained, and that organizers of the "disorder" had been identified.
   Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, told RFE/RL that "we respect the protest by the citizens after the tragedy, but we will do everything to prevent the Russian secret services and their supporters from further destabilizing the situation."
   Kostyantynivka lies north of the regional capital, Donetsk, which is held by Russian-backed rebels whose conflict with government forces has killed more than 6,000 people since April.

Russia will soon attack in southern Ukraine – Saakashvili
   (Zik) --- Mikhail Saakashvili, the pro bono adviser to Pres Poroshenko, says his efforts to persuade US politicians to give weapons to Ukraine have begun to bear fruit as the pressure from both parties on Pres Obama is picking up.
   “I believe that the US will give weapons to Ukraine. I am glad that the society and political elites are unanimous on the issue,” he told Bloomberg March 16. 
Russia will soon escalate the war in Donbas, therefore weapons supplies must be done urgently, he said. “Weapons are needed urgently as there is no ceasefire agreement,” he said.
   The leader of the ruling Bloc Petra Poroshenka faction in Rada, Yury Lutsenko, also believes Russia will start full-sized offensive in April-May.

Ukrainian soldiers ejected terrorists attacking from several directions near Maiorsk village - InfoResist
   (Censor.NET) --- The Russian-terrorist forces were shelling the Ukrainian troops’ positions at the Donetsk, Luhansk and Mariupol directions during the last 24 hours.
   Dmytro Tymchuk wrote on Facebook citing the Information Resistance group situation report, Censor.NET informs.
   According to him, the greatest terrorist activity was recorded near the villages of Avdiivka, Starohnativka, Pisky, and Shyrokyne.
   "Several hostile groups attacked the Ukrainian troops' positions near Maiorsk village from several directions. The Ukrainian soldiers managed to stop the enemy attack by retaliatory fire and forced the militants to retreat to their original position," Tymchuk wrote.
   In addition, he said that along with the "DPR" and "LPR" "armies'" ongoing combat capability strengthening one may observe the Russian-terrorist forces command's attempts to balance the size and structure of its detachments in particular areas, in accordance with the tasks.
   "The system of command and control is being upgraded. One more "training center" for the militants arriving for retraining from Russia as well as for the terrorists from the local gangs was noticed to be created in the vicinity of the town of Krasnyi Luch," Tymchuk added.

March 16, rebels shelled Ukraine army positions 30 times
   (Zik) --- Donbas rebels and Russian troops violated the ceasefire 30 times, the army spokesman told Kanal 5 TV March 17.
   The rebels used mortars and grenade throwers 19 times, artillery 3 times and tanks 4 times, he said.
   Most intense shelling took place in the Donetsk area.
   In the Mariupol area, the rebels used mortars to shell Shyrokine four times.
   The enemy troops attacked Majorsky from several directions simultaneously. All its attacks were repulsed, military expert Dmytro Tymchuk says.

SBU nets two terrorist groups in Odesa
   (Zik) --- The Security Service of Ukraine exposed two terrorist groups in Odesa, arresting five of their members, SBU spokesman said March 16, Interfax-Ukrayina reports.
   SBU is working toward arresting other members of these groups.
   The terrorists are charged with bombing the offices of political parties, volunteer NGOs and city infrastructure.
   One of the suspects, a 30-year old local, deserted from the Ukrainian army and is linked to at least three of the past bombings.
   SBU found guns, small arms, over 20 grenades, anti-tank bazookas and over 6,000 rounds of ammunition in his hiding place.
