BBC team comes under
fire in Shyrokyne
(Ukraine Today)
--- BBC correspondents witnessed attacks on Ukrainian army positions by
Russian-backed militants in the village
of Shyrokyne near
Mariupol
During the attacks,
the BBC team witnessed the use of heavy weapons, which should have been withdrawn
from the contact line under the provisions of Minsk peace agreement.
Ukrainian military
positions were shelled so many times, that is was difficult to calculate the
amount of shells fired, a BBC correspondent said.
The militants were
firing for an hour before Ukraine 's
military returned fire.
According to one
BBC correspondent, shelling started as soon as the OSCE monitoring team has
left the place.
Ukrainian soldiers
showed reporters a shell that had hit a house, but did not explode. The size of
the shell showed that it was fired from a weapon prohibited under the Minsk ceasefire accord.
Leaders of the
so-called Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic, for
their part, accused the Ukrainian side of shelling.
Since the truce was
signed back in February, there have been nearly daily breaches by
Russian-backed militants. Ukrainian forces say they have to return the fire.

down a cigarette butt near the village
of Kolodezniy . Grass
caught fire.
The journalist was
reporting on Vladimir Putin's arrival in Khakasia on April 22. Thousands of
houses in the region have been destroyed. Some 34 people died, and more than

Poroshenko says he
will hold referendum on NATO membership
(UNIAN) --- Ukrainian President Petro
Poroshenko announced during his visit to France
his plans to call for a nation-wide referendum on the “fundamental” issue of Ukraine ’s
potential NATO membership.
However, no
specific date for such a vote was mentioned, Ukraine Today reports.
Meanwhile, public
opinion in Ukraine has
shifted towards supporting Ukraine ’s
bid to join the alliance in the wake of Russia ’s
aggressive moves, which started a year ago with the annexation of Crimea and
later Russia ’s support for
militants in eastern Ukraine .
Still, the United States and the EU doubt that Ukraine will
become a NATO member state in the short term.

Russian Foreign
Ministry suspects Ukraine ’s
NSDC of creating a nuclear bomb in its dungeons. Turchynov recommends taking
some pills
(Censor.NET) --- Russian Foreign
Ministry Information and Press Department released its comment on the
statements of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Secretary
Oleksandr Turchynov about the alleged creation of a nuclear bomb in Ukraine.
Censor.NET reports
citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation official
website.
"Our attention
was attracted by a recent statement of the NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov

by various terrorist groups," the statement reads.

creation of such devices would make Ukraine a rogue state and put the

Oleksandr Turchynov
called the statements of the Russian Foreign Ministry a morbid imagination of
Russian officials.
"Ukraine will
defend its territorial integrity strictly observing all its international

"And as for
the authors of such statements, who talk nonsense in their fright distorting

Demilitarization of
Shyrokyne does not mean Ukrainian army will leave the village - Turchynov
(Censor.NET) --- Demilitarization of
Shyrokyne village near Mariupol, the Donetsk
region, does not mean that the Ukrainian troops will retreat from the village.
As reported by
Censor.NET, this was announced by the NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov in an
interview to Channel 5.
"When we speak of demilitarization, it does not mean that we need to retreat from a village, let's say, of Shyrokyne. We mean that we need to create a permanent OSCE monitoring mission point in Shyrokyne. As of now, they work as follows: they travel around the territory from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. As soon as they leave at 5 p.m., the Russian terrorist groups start shelling," Turchynov said.

He added that under
the Minsk agreements, Shyrokyne is under total
control of Ukraine .
"If a permanent OSCE station is created there, with OSCE observers, the city will be controlled by the Ukrainian police, ... including the part where terrorists deploy," the NSDC secretary noted.
Turchynov believes that "only under these circumstances can we say that our military units will retreat for a kilometer in order to demilitarize the area and to stop chances for provocations by the Russian terrorist groups."
