Ukrainian military ready to ensure Shyrokyne demilitarization
(Interfax) --- Ukraine is ready to ensure the demilitarization of Shyrokyne, Donetsk region, on the condition of full observance of ceasefire for the duration of a set period of time, the press center for the Ukrainian military operation reported on Friday.
The source said representatives of Ukraine in the Joint Center for Control and Coordination (JCCC) determined additional events to fully cease fire on the problem sections of the division line in the area of Shyrokyne and the adjacent regions during a recent working visit to Shyrokyne.
"Issues relating to the demilitarization of the territory of the said populated area and the deployment in it of a permanent observation point staffed by representatives of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) were also addressed," the press center said in a report.
During the trilateral meeting, Alexander Hug, deputy head of the OSCE SMM, was given the main provisions of the proposals made by the Ukrainian part of the JCCC concerning the demilitarization of Shyrokyne.
"The meeting participants pointed out Ukraine's readiness to ensure the demilitarization of the appropriate area on condition of full ceasefire in the course of a specific period of time. Among other things, this will help deploy a permanent observation point," the press center said.

Ukraine to join EU, yet NATO membership is in question – minister
(Interfax) --- Ukraine will definitely join the European Union but its membership in NATO remains in question in the case of the alliance's ineffective response to contemporary challenges, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said.
"I think that throughout the long period of its existence NATO has been focused on Article 5, i.e. mutual defense commitments, hard security. And we are saying that we are fighting a hybrid war. I am not 100% sure that NATO is fully prepared to fight similar or future hybrid wars and that NATO currently has a structure optimal for dealing with such [challenges] […] No doubt, NATO has been adapting. So, I am always frank about our critical need for participation in structures and guarantees. Yet we will have to seek other options if the alliance fails to provide guarantees for Ukraine," he said in an interview with the online publication Evropeiska Pravda published on Friday.
He gave an affirmative answer to the question whether Ukraine would become an EU member.
Speaking of alternative ways to provide Ukraine's security, Klimkin said, "These ways of the provision of security can create much bigger challenges to our partners than those they are currently anticipating from Ukraine's possible NATO membership."
Klimkin dwelled on problems existing within the North Atlantic alliance and said that the alliance was lacking consensus on many aspects of its development. "NATO is an organization with a rather complicated structure, incorporating, for instance, Canada and Turkey. So, a lot will depend on the development of NATO in the near future," he said.

Militants fire ‘withdrawn weapons’ seven times at Ukrainian army
(UNIAN) --- Russian-backed militants in the Donbas attacked Ukrainian army positions seven times using weapons that were supposed to have been withdrawn from the front line under the Minsk peace agreements, National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a briefing in Kiev on Friday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.
"Over the last day, the situation in the area of the Anti-Terrorist Operation was tense, but under control. The militants fired on our positions several times using weapons that were supposed to have been withdrawn from the front line under the Minsk peace agreements," Lysenko said.
"In particular, the militants fired 120mm mortars five times and 122mm artillery twice," Lysenko said.
"Our military comply with the Minsk agreements and fires in response only in the case of a real threat to the lives of our soldiers," he said.
"The hottest spots were the villages of Shyrokyne and Talakivka near Mariupol. Near Donetsk, it was the Donetsk airport area and the suburbs of the town of Horlivka. In the area of Luhansk, the militants fired on our positions near the town of Popasna and the Bakhmutka highway," Lysenko added.

Lysenko: One Ukrainian soldier wounded in Donbas conflict zone in last day
(UNIAN) --- No Ukrainian soldiers were killed but one was injured in the Donbas conflict zone over the last 24 hours, National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a briefing in Kiev on Friday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.
"Over the last day, we haven’t lost any Ukrainian soldiers, but one was injured as a result of military clashes near the village of Pisky of Donetsk region," Lysenko said.
Under agreements reached in Minsk on February 12, a ceasefire was supposed to come into effect in eastern Ukraine on February 15. However, the ceasefire was broken within an hour, and militants launched an attack on the government-held town of Debaltseve in Donetsk region, which they captured on February 18.
As UNIAN reported earlier, on February 12, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande held talks in Minsk to resolve the conflict in the Donbas.
Since then, the militants have continued to attack the positions of the Ukrainian armed forces throughout the territory of the Donbas, Ukraine’s military says.
