DPR, LPR attempts to hold separate elections in Donbas on Oct 18 to have destructive consequences - Poroshenko
(Interfax) --- Attempts to hold elections in territories in eastern Ukraine not controlled by Kiev will mean Russia breaks agreements reached in Minsk, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said at a news conference on Thursday.
"The attempts to hold on October 18 illegitimate elections not meeting Ukrainian legislation and Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) criteria will mean a harsh attack of Russia on the Minsk agreements reached on February 12, 2015. I am certain that this will be extremely irresponsible and will have devastating consequences for the process of deescalation of tension in certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions," Poroshenko said.
It has been reported that head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Alexander Zakharchenko scheduled local elections in the DPR for October 18, 2015.

Canada Day Festivities: Officials and dignitaries celebrate support for Ukraine
(Ukraine Today) --- Canada has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the start of Russia's military aggression
The Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Roman Waschuk began the celebrations by highlighting some of the common traits which connect Canada and Ukraine.
He also mentioned the strong response Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave to Russian president Vladimir Putin over the Kremlin's military intervention in Ukraine.
Overall the Canadian government has provided Ukraine with USD 400 million in low interest loans and USD 20.9 million for financial, fiscal, and national bank reforms. As well as USD 212 million in bilateral development assistance and at least USD 35 million in security support which includes non-lethal aid.
Another sign of support is on its way, with at least 200 Canadian troops expected to arrive in Ukraine this summer to train their Ukrainian counterparts. They'll be taking part in a training programme which has already started by US soldiers. The US ambassador talked about the Canadian and US support for Ukraine
Ukraine's recently appointed governor of the port city of Odesa, Georgian national Mikhail Saakashvili, said that Canada will continue to play a major role in Ukraine.

Russia's Duma suggests denouncement of Russia-Ukraine state border agreement
(UNIAN) --- The deputy of the lower house of the Russian parliament, the Duma, Yevgeniy Fedorov has sent a letter to parliament speaker Sergiy Naryshkin, suggesting the denouncement of the agreement on the Russian-Ukrainian state border, which is currently in force between the two states, Russian newspaper Izvestia has reported.
The current document defines the occupied Crimean peninsula as a part of Ukraine, which, according to Fedorov, can be used as a claim against Russia "by its enemies," Izvestia wrote.
He suggests that the Chairman of the State Duma initiate the process of the termination of the agreement that is controversial, in his opinion, in order to avoid any legal conflicts.
The preparation of the agreement on the state border between Russia and Ukraine took several years, and the main disputes were related to the water boundary in the Kerch Strait.
Thus, the maritime boundaries between the two states remained an open question, however, the occupied Crimean peninsula is defined as the territory of Ukraine.
"A decision on the reunification with the Crimea has already been taken and implemented, so now we need to streamline international treaties in accordance with the decision taken at the constitutional level. They should be revised to ensure that all the documents are in line with the fundamental law," Fedorov said.
"The agreement on the state border between Russia and Ukraine in its present form cannot exist, and it must be denounced," he said.
As reported earlier, the Russian government is considering the possibility of disbanding "the Ministry of Crimean Affairs." The occupied Crimea has recently become a point of dispute between various interest groups, according to a source in the Russian presidential administration.
